Together, Panasonic and Tesla have developed a next-generation battery technology that delivers the highest energy density and best performance on the market. Panasonic`s cylindrical cell is a custom-made technology specifically designed to optimize the quality and lifespan of electric vehicles. Tesla integrates these cells into the battery pack so that the Model S offers a range of 265 miles. This agreement builds on multi-year cooperation between Panasonic and Tesla to develop next-generation batteries and accelerate the expansion of the electric vehicle market. In 2009, Panasonic and Tesla entered into a supply contract. In 2010, Panasonic invested $30 million in Tesla to deepen the partnership and drive the growth of the electric vehicle industry. October 30, 2013, Panasonic Corporation and Tesla Motors announced today that the two companies have reached an agreement in which Panasonic will expand its automotive-grade lithium-ion battery offering to Tesla. With this agreement, the two companies are updating and extending their 2011 agreement to provide nearly 2 billion cells over four years.
